  • Rusty secateurs? Make them good as new!

    March 12, 2020

Whether you left your favourite snips out in the weather or you've unearthed an old pair from the back of the garden shed, we are all too aware of how easily secateurs can rust. But don't fret, we know how to get them looking good a new again!

The best part is, you can de-rust your snips with ingredients we bet you already have in your pantry.

    What you'll need:

    • Rusty secateurs
    • Vinegar
    • Water
    • Olive oil
    • Piece of cloth you don't mind getting dirty

Before you start, remove any build-up of dirt with a cloth or soft brush.

    Step one:
Find a container or bucket your gardening snips will fit into. Now create a mixture of 50% Vinegar and 50% water inside your container. Place your rusty secateurs into the mixture and let them soak for approximately 1-2 hours.

    Step two:
After sitting in the mixture, the rust will have slowly fallen away from your snips. With your cloth rub away any remaining rust. If you have any particularly tough rust spots left we recommend steel wool or even a scrunched up piece of aluminium foil should do the job.

    Step three:
Rinse the shears and give them a coating of olive oil all over. Wrap them in the cloth for long term care.
