Why buy delivered plants?
Here’s 6 quick reasons from the top of our head.
Today we’re talking about the amazing world of mushroom grow kits. Because we love fungi so ‘mush’, Plants in a Box have teamed up with Little Acre, Brisbane’s best urban mushroom farm, so you can grow your very own gourmet mushrooms at home.
Mushrooms come in a huge variety of shapes and sizes. In fact, there are around 1.5 million species across the globe – that’s 6 times more than plants! Mushrooms aren’t a plant and they’re not an animal, they’re somewhere in between. They’re their own kingdom- Fungi!
In the wild, many mushroom species help break down plant and animal matter and return the nutrients to the soil. They’re like the digestive systems of the forest! You may even find mushrooms popping up in your compost heap from time to time!
As always, we love to partner with amazing local businesses and Little Acre certainly fits the bill! This small (but mighty) Aussie business supplies award-winning gourmet mushrooms to some of Brisbane's finest cafes and restaurants. They also offer courses to educate the community about growing a multitude of mushroom species. Most excitingly of all, they have created their very own gourmet mushroom grow kits, so you can grow your own tasty mushrooms all year round!
Little Acre has a range of mushroom grow kits to choose from, including:
Little Acre and Plants in a Box are super simpatico. We both believe in sustainability and earth-friendly practices. Just like us, they use compostable and recyclable packaging and organic, biodynamic and non-GMO ingredients in their mushroom grow kits.
On the whole, mushroom farming is very gentle on Mother Earth. From the beginning of the growing process, right through to harvest, mushrooms require less growing materials, water, and energy than other popular crops. They also emit far less carbon dioxide and require less space than most fruit and vegetables.
When growing mushrooms, it’s best to place your mushroom grow kit in an area with light, but not direct sunlight (direct light will kill them off. Somewhere with enough light that you could comfortably read a book. They don’t take up ‘mushroom’ (get it!). So, you can find a nice spot for them in almost any suitable room.
The temperature and humidity levels required will depend on what variety you are growing, but most mushrooms enjoy humidity levels in the 85-100% range in a location where the temperature stays between 15 °C to 24°C.
After that, follow the grow kit’s care directions for advice on how often to water or mist your mushroom babies. It’s important that they stay nice and moist, or they will dry out and die. Then the waiting game begins. But don’t worry! You won’t have to wait long before you can feast on your shrooms. Most varieties will be ready for their first harvest within 3 to 5 weeks!
So, what’s so great about eating mushrooms? Low-fat and high-fibre, mushrooms are linked to heaps of amazing health benefits. Mushies are loaded with beneficial bioactive compounds including ergothioneine, ergosterol, vitamin D, vitamin D12, beta-glucan, and selenium, which can do wonders for our physical and mental health. They can:
