Ferns have been around for more than 300 million years. They are flowerless plants that tend to grow in damp, shady areas. Ferns are helpful in preventing or eliminating pollution because they remove heavy metals from the air and the soil.

Although many ferns grow in moist shady places, it does not mean that they need no light. Their natural environment is dappled light, and if the light level in your home is too low, you will see poor growth and yellowing fronds. Give your ferns a position near a window that gets morning or late afternoon sun, and keep the ferns away from strong sunlight, especially during the summer. Direct sunlight will make them lose their leaves or sadly turn their fronds yellow and nobody wants that.

Whether you’re looking for bathroom plants or something to spruce up a windowsill, ferns are a fantastic option. With their intricate fronds and verdant green colour, it’s hard to believe ferns are one of the oldest groups of plants on the planet.

What to use me for: I look mighty fine in a bathroom but also look just as good in any room in the house

Where to place me: Most of my friends in this pack like a nice, bright, filtered light 

Soil Conditions: Make sure you use a good quality potting mix and a pot that has a hole in it for drainage

• Growing

Lighting
Ferns love a shady spot, so try and replicate their natural rainforest environment. This means bright filtered light indoors or full shade in your garden!

Watering
Bathrooms are always a good spot for your new weeping fronds as they enjoy the high levels of natural humidity. While ferns like to be kept moist, too much watering will cause root rot. Ensure that the soil is kept moist, but never soaking!
