Alocasia reginula 'Black Velvet' Elephant Ears Plant

Did we say "Black Velvet" Yeah you heard us right! Beautiful dark velvet leaves. He's a must plant if you want to be better than everyone else! He is a smaller tropical elephant ear that loves warm, moist areas and does do well indoors.

Description

Black Velvet is a dwarf Alocasia and has dark, almost black leaves, adorned with brilliant silvery-white veins and a velvety look makes for a strikingly brilliant plant. The underneath colour throws off a purple tone. Anthurium-like flowers are produced throughout the year when growing conditions are favourable. These consist of a sterile, finger-like floral column (spadix) surrounded by a pale green petal-like leaf (spathe).

This little baby requires high humidity for good growth. Choose a location with partial to full shade and organic-rich, well-drained soil. They are very cold sensitive. This Darker leaf Alocasia prefers well-drained soil on the drier side - like a succulent let the soil dry out a little between watering.

Alocasia will adjust its size according to the amount of sun it receives. The more sun it receives the smaller it will be, the less sun it receives the larger it will become "to a point"

These fast-growing houseplants can push out new leaves almost weekly when they are actively growing. When the weather turns cold, Alocasia will hold steady until the next growing season.

  • Growing
  • The Alocasia began in the tropical rainforests, so why wouldn't the plant dig those warm damp conditions? Here's the thing, Alocasias: They like soil a little on the drier side but require high humidity to prosper.

Light -  I Love a Light position, but not in full sun; otherwise, my leaves will only burn. In the wintertime, move me towards the light 💡this is the key to keeping me happy in the cooler months.

Temps - I don't enjoy being cold, so watch out for the cooler weather, and I dig humidity (yep, even in summer), so a humidifier is great if you have one. During the winter, Alocasias will go through a dormancy period and will require less frequent watering as the soil will take longer to dry. Avoid placing the plant near an exterior door, drafty window, or in front of an air conditioning or heating vent, as these temperature fluctuations can inhibit growth and potentially damage the leaves.

Water me - Regularly give water at room temperature, don’t allow the soil to dry out. But don't overwater either. Alocasia enjoys a humidifier a session every now and then in the shower or pops me outside during summer rain. It's good to note that the Alocasia have a rhizome root system. These thick roots will store extra water for the plant!

Plant vitamins we like to call it - Give an organic plant food twice a month during the growing season but go easy; otherwise, you'll only burn me.

Lastly, If your Alocasia gets yellowing leaves, chances are it’s been too wet or too dry. Root rot can occur. Brown spots and brown leaf edges can often be caused by insufficient humidity and/or the potting soil is too dry. This can also cause the plant to droop.
