Asplenium antiquum

Mature tubestock, premium and ready to plant!

pet friendly

Asplenium antiquum - This shade-loving fern is sure to make a statement in your tropical garden or as part of your indoor plant gang - also known as the Japanese Birds Nest Fern.

This is a unique looking plant with lime green leathery fronds that grow from the plant’s centre in straight stems and develop crested feathery tips to give the effect of a bird’s nest.

It’s a really unusual fern for texture and looks great mixed with other dainty ferns in a pot, hanging basket or shady border.

Many Asplenium species are frost tender, so keep in a cool shaded position with ample moisture and humidity. She needs free-draining organically-rich soil or potting mix, and plenty of water.

Note: Do not touch, move, or handle the new delicate fronds as they emerge from the nest. They are extremely fragile. If you touch them, there is a high chance of them becoming damaged or deformed.

Quick Facts:

  • What to use me for: I look great in a pot on the coffee table, in a balcony hanging basket, or under a tree in a shady garden.
  • I grow to: I’ll reach 50-100cm high and 1m wide
  • Where to place me: Full shade or dappled shade please I’m practically a vampire that burns in the sunlight. Don't expose me to direct sun other than the very early morning sun.
  • How far to space me: I’m wider than I am tall, so give me 1 metre outside. A pot will constrain my size if you’re looking for indoor friends.
  • Watering: Keep my compost moist, but don't let me become soggy. Avoid watering right into the "nest" as that encourages mould and rot. Water my soil rather than the plant.
  • Soil Conditions: I thrive in rich soil loaded with plant food like organic matter. In a pot I need free-draining potting mix please. During the growing season (April through September), fertilize me about once a month with weak liquid fertilizer.

Our plants are beautifully grown, mature tube stock with well-developed roots. They are guaranteed sun-hardened, can be planted directly into the ground and are excellent performers for your garden.

We carefully package your plants into a customised box to ensure safe transport, healthy plants and delivery to your door.

Please take care when choosing your plants. Some plants are poisonous and individuals may be more sensitive or react differently
