Old Man Banksia (Banksia serrata)

The "Old Man Banksia", as it is known to many Australians is a Robust 15m native Australian banksia with green-cream brushes during spring and autumn. Suited to seaside gardens - where it will grow as a shrub in well-drained soils. He grows naturally on the coast from TAS to QLD, so very adaptable as to climate indeed.

Description

He's a Big, bold banksia with large rugged zigzag (serrated) leaves and bird-attracting green-cream flowers in summer and autumn. He loves a good old coastal landscape and an ideal option for all flower gardens and can even function as a reasonably reliable screening plant or wind-breaker.  Plus, the banksia Serrata’s sought-after pollen supports local honey production and will attract lots of butterflies, bees and nectar-seeking birds. Great for beginners.

  • Quick Facts
  • What to use me for: Great for coastal gardens as an informal hedge

    I grow to:  3 - 5m high and 3-4m wide

Where to place me: Full sun and part shaded areas. Plant in a sunny position in the garden in well-drained soil. Drought tolerant once established. Tolerates wind and salt spray. Woot woot!

My features: I have a handsome cream, yellow, brown flower and I am drought, frost and coastal weather tolerant

Please take care when choosing your plants. Some plants are poisonous and individuals may be more sensitive or react differently.

  • How to water me
A good rule of thumb is to give me a drink a couple of times a week while I am new, once established I do not need much water.

    Soil PH
I will do my best with a soil PH level between 5.5-6.5, you can read more about the importance of PH levels here

    Tips and tricks
You can mulch around my trunk with good organic pea straw, woodchip or sugarcane mulch, remember to give me a little breathing space around my trunk.

Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. Prune after flowering to promote dense growth habits. Feed with a slow-release native fertiliser during spring - Banksia is phosphorus-sensitive so the P ratio of the fertiliser needs to be under 3%.

  • Delivery
  • Once your new plant babes are dispatched you will receive tracking information so you can keep an eye on its journey. Once in transit, packages usually take 2-10 business days to arrive. If you need it delivered ASAP we recommend upgrading to express post to get it there faster.

So your babes arrive in the best condition we hold off shipping if there is an upcoming public holiday or crazy weather event. We carefully package your plants into a customised box to ensure safe transport, healthy plants, and fast, free delivery to your door.
