Description

A long-time favourite of house plant lovers, Rex Begonia, is grown for her colourful, textured foliage. Rex begonia can be challenging to grow because of her need for high humidity, and so you will need to watch for dry, brittle leaves as they are a symptom of dry air. High humidity gal! The dazzling foliage of the Rex begonia plant is an eye-catching choice for a houseplant. Her rich, variegated foliage is a great way to bring interest into the home.

  • Tips and tricks
There are a few tricks to owning a begonia. Water lightly but regularly. Avoid over-watering or over-feeding her and apply liquid

fertiliser at half dilution every eight weeks for best results. It's good to note that the foliage can die back during the cooler months when plants become dormant. Try to avoid feeding and reduce watering until plants develop new leaves. Repot during spring only if plants become rootbound, and please protect her from the frost. She's cold-sensitive.

Dropped leaves? Fancy-leafed begonias sometimes drop their leaves and become dormant in the winter. If this happens, cut off the withered leaves, stop watering, and enclose the plant in a plastic bag.

Dry, crispy leaves may be a symptom of dry soil, dry air or direct sunlight. Keep rex begonia in bright, indirect light and boost the humidity around it.

Yellow leaves are caused by overwatering. It's a good idea to use a small pot with drainage holes. Water thoroughly, then empty the drainage tray. If you want to use a pot without drainage holes, slip a plain nursery pot into the pot with no hole. Put pebbles in the bottom of the cachepot to keep the inner pot above the drainage water.

Is rex begonia poisonous? Yes. It contains calcium oxalate that is highly toxic to cats and dogs. It's not a good choice for a home with curious pets that may play with or chew on plants.
