The Plant Killers Box

I love houseplants so much, but unfortunately, I am a bad bad plant mother and they wilt on me without fail. But recently I’ve had luck with this plant -The ZZ!  – they’re the most resilient, effortless, hard-to-kill houseplants growing around, only requiring a wee bit of TLC. How to grow ZZ plants = The short answer is very little effort.

  • Quick Facts
  • What to use me for: Gift me to a loved one or spoil yourself - this kit has everything you need for the new indoor plant lover.

I grow to: 60cm-1m high - 30-60cm wide and I will stay contained to your pot size within reason if you leave me be.

Where to place me: I love a bright light indoors ZZ plants do best in bright to moderate, indirect light, but will do fine in low levels of light, however, deep shade must be avoided if you want it to grow. Equally too much light can be damaging as it doesn't like harsh direct sunlight.

This plant makes an ideal plant for a window-less office or bathroom where it will only receive small amounts of fluorescent light. ZZ plant care starts with a lack of care. In fact, ZZ plants will do better if you leave them alone!

Please take care when choosing your plants. Some plants are poisonous and individuals may be more sensitive or react differently.

  • Plant size: I am 15-20cm tall in a 100mm nursery pot

    Pot size: 170mm wide x 145mm high x 100mm planting depth

  • How to water me
I am very forgiving and don't need too much water because I can store water in my leaves. I'm drought tolerant and can survive months without water, so infrequent watering is no problem. On the other hand, constant heavy watering without allowing the soil to dry out in between will turn my dang leaves yellow, then rotting will occur. Only fill my self-watering pot base to halfway. Sitting in too much water will only call the pests to arrive, and ain't nobody loves that.

    Tips and tricks

ZZ plant care starts with a lack of care. In fact, ZZ plants will do better if you leave them alone. Much like cactus, they need less rather than more water. Water the plant only when the soil has dried out. The rare way you can kill this plant is to overwater it. A ZZ plant turning yellow means that it is getting too much water and its underground rhizomes may be rotting. So if you remember nothing else about caring for a ZZ plant, just remember to forget to water it. It can survive weeks, gosh months without water but will grow faster if watered somewhat regularly.

ZZ plants are happy without fertilizer, but if you would like, you can give the plants half-strength fertiliser one to two times a year and only in the growing season.

Only repot if it's needed and do it in Spring or Summer.
