Pellionia pulchra

Uniquely different is t Pellionia pulchra. A hardy, evergreen vining plant. He usually goes by the name Watermelon Pellionia or Rainbow Vine (pending what is trending that month). He is favoured for his reddish stems with round leaves that have a similar pattern to that of yes a watermelon. His cascading foliage makes him right at home in a hanging basket.

Description

Pellionia pulchra is a plant that only a houseplant mamma or pappa can love but he is from the Urticaceae family, which makes him a relative to the ever so popular Pilea peperomioides. We like to think of them as cousins.

Originally hailing from the tropics, Pellionia likes a nice humid environment and prefers a spot out of direct sunlight. If you are putting him on the balcony make sure he has his hat on or in the shade and in a sheltered position. He likes to be kept moist but be careful not to overwater. If his leaves begin to turn brown it might be a sign of too much water or too much sun.

If you are lucky you might see his flower, the flowers themselves are nothing to jump out of bed for but rumour has it they release pollen which looks like little puffs of white smoke. Puff the magic dragon type of thing.

He might not be as popular as his cousin but we think he looks amazing in a hanging basket with his leaves cascading over the pot.
