So turns out there is actually an Australian Standard which is applied to potting mixes, so knowing these certifications can help you choose the best potting mix for your plants. "What is the best soil mix to buy?"

The standards are indicated by a “logo” printed on the bag with a series of “ticks” on them. Each potting mix needs to pass a series of stringent tests and is of high quality.

These ticks are either red or black – the red ticks indicate that this potting mix has met the Australian Standards for a Premium Potting Mix and that it contains fertiliser.

Bags with black ticks have met the standards tests for a regular potting mix - these do not contain fertiliser and are best used for fast-growing plants, or by gardeners who like to add their own fertilisers to pots.

You can make your own potting mix but if your soil shopping just look out for the ticks.
