Ficus are also fast growers and respond to pruning well. If you feel that your plant is growing too “leggy” a good cutback will help the plant fill in with new growth creating a bushier form.

Eek my Ficus is dropping leaves?

Yes, the Ficus is one of the most popular indoor plants, but they can also be one of the more snobby of indoor plants to grow. When bringing your Ficus home odds are that the Ficus will drop many of his leaves. This is totally normal and is the way that the plant learns to cope in his new surroundings. Leaf drop should continue for a couple of weeks before tapering off, he just wants to get comfortable.

But I've had my Ficus forever?

If you have had your Ficus for some time and leaf drop has started unexpectedly – then there are a few questions we would like you to ask yourself, this will help you figure out what is going wrong with your mate.

Is he under stress? Has he been over-watered or under-watered? Has there been a change in lighting? Ficus are fairly drought tolerant, so if you are not sure of the watering it may be better to under-water than overdo it. Is the plant near a heating or air conditioning vent? Are there any pests or insects? A cold gust of wind through a door or window blowing on in?

In particular, rubber tree plants are susceptible to being infested with scale bugs, and these pests will cause the leaves to drop off until the plant is treated. Treat scale or other pests with an insecticide like neem oil. Humidity – Rubber tree plants need higher humidity. Houses can be dry, especially in the winter when the heat is on. This lack of humidity can cause leaves falling off the rubber tree plant.

More than likely one of these reasons may be causing your Ficus to shed his leaves.

Ficus, like every other living thing, need a source of energy. The plants take in their nutrients from the water and potting medium they are planted in. With soil it's you pay for what you get I'm afraid. Potting mix will only hold so much, and when the nutrients are depleted, fertiliser is the only source left.

Ficus love fertiliser and so we recommend an organic liquid feed like seasol (just make sure it's diluted first before using)
