Ctenanthe Burle Marxii - Pot + Plant + Soil

If you've ever tried growing a Calathea and had very little success (actually nill) but still can't get over the unique patterns, the interest in your plant collection? Then we'll let you in on The Ctenanthe’s best-kept secret! He is the easier-er variety, looks a lot like a Calathea (but he's not) and can handle a lot of what you got to give (most often not a lot) along with handling the lower light levels.

Description

Burle-Marxii, is named after the famous Brazilian artist and landscape designer – Roberto Burle Marx (absolute legend who you need to google ASAP if you haven't heard of him!) This babe is native to the hot, humid rainforests of Brazil which means he likes a nice bright light, regular water and a nice humid spot away from any cold breezes.

He also gets called a bunch of other names like Fishbone Prayer Plant, Calathea Fishbone, or Calathea ambilis. Regardless of all his different names, he is a cruisy, brilliant indoor houseplant loved for his easy-going nature, colourful patterned leaves and his interesting nighttime habits. He has striped, fishbone patterned leaves that arrange themselves in an upright fan-like arrangement and are greyish/green with dark green margins and a red underside. Come night he tucks and folds his leaves away like he is making a prayer (hence his nickname Fishbone Prayer Plant).

While Ctenanthe Burle-Marxii plants are not known for their flowers, they do produce clusters appearing at the ends of long stalks that reach through the thick foliage.

Ctenanthe Burle Marxii plant prefers shade. Do not place this plant in direct sunlight, as the bright rays can scorch the leaves.

Give me a top-up when the first few cms of my soil are dry to touch. Regular watering is needed, even during the winter. Water regularly during the warmer months while relying on rainwater whenever possible. In the winter, keep the soil moist. Do not overwater. Excess water leads to root rot!

NOTE: Add liquid fertilizer during the summer. Feed these prayer-plants once every two weeks to supply it with extra nutrients.

    Potting needs

I like a pot with a drainage hole and will do my best in good quality, well-draining potting mix which I come with!

    Tips and tricks

Because I am from the tropics I need to be kept in a humid spot like the bathroom. If you think your house doesn't get enough humidity pop on a pebble tray or shout yourself a humidifier. Cut back any browning old leaves and let my new ones move on in.
