When does Iris japonica ‘Variegata’ flower?

The main flowering period is spring, when delicate iris-like flowers appear above the variegated foliage.

Does Iris japonica need pruning?

Not much! Remove old, damaged or untidy leaves as needed to keep the clump looking fresh. After flowering, spent flower stems can also be removed. As the plant gradually spreads, you can divide established clumps if you want to propagate it or keep its size under control.

Is Iris japonica ‘Variegata’ good for shade?

Yes. Shade is one of its biggest selling points. The cream-and-green variegated foliage helps brighten darker areas of the garden even when the plant isn't flowering. It's particularly useful for underplanting beneath trees, provided there is enough soil and moisture for it to establish.

Can I grow Iris japonica ‘Variegata’ in a pot?

Yes. Choose a pot with good drainage and use a quality, free-draining potting mix. Container-grown plants will generally need watering more regularly than those planted in the garden, particularly during warmer weather.
