Description
Strelitzia Reginae is more commonly known as the 'Bird of Paradise' as its Spring to Summer blooms resemble a fiery orange crest with a purple tongue. Its exotic looks give a tropical feel that’s perfect for a border or by the pool.
Leaves measure around 50cms and it grows to an overall height of 1.5 metres. This makes it great as a mid-height plant which is tricky to find. It’ll survive on low water levels but will need a regular watering commitment for the first 12 weeks while its roots are sent out.
Virtually bomb-proof the Bird of Paradise plant withstands drought once it’s established, fends off most diseases and handles full sun or part shade. The flowers are also great for picking and will hold in a vase easily for weeks on end.
A more reliable and cheerful plant you’ll be hard-pressed to find. We love it.

What to use me for: My bird-like bright orange blooms look great planted in large numbers. You can put me in poolside pots on the deck and I’m also a great cut flower for a modern vase.

Let me kick off with watering.
Succulents don’t like a lot of water and long periods of drought won’t hurt yours one bit, they’re the best type of plant for forgetful folk, or those that are away from home a fair bit, so don’t feel bad if you haven’t given him a drink yet. One of the most common mistakes people make is watering them too much! The best potting mix for succulents is a well draining one. Using a good potting mix of porous soil for succulents is super important to prevent overwatering. Water your succulent when the soil is dry. Soak it thoroughly rather than giving it regular sips and always empty excess water from the saucer as it will rot the roots. If you’re struggling try one of our self-watering pots they make a plant killer look like a pro! In winter succulents need even less water. You can touch the soil each week and if it’s even a bit damp then leave it alone and try again the following week. Succulents need little moisture and although it seems cruel, a sure-fire way to kill your beauty is by watering it frequently. This will turn it to mush.
